"My Love" is the third single and eleventh track from Florence and the Machine’s fifth studio album Dance Fever.

Background[]

Florence wanted this song to represent freedom in the form of dance, set in a nightclub[1] particularly in reference to the isolating nature of the COVID-19 pandemic; similar to themes in “Free”.

According to a press release,[2] “My Love” was originally written and recorded as an acoustic track described by Florence as a “sad little poem,” that recounts Welch experiencing writer’s block and having a hard time adjusting to a world shifted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The song was later transformed by producer Dave Bayley into the energetic track that it is.

Announced on March 9,[3] only a day prior to its debut, “My Love” was released just three days after “Heaven Is Here,” the album’s previous single, accompanied by its music video and Dance Fever’s pre-sale. The song simultaneously premiered on BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast with Greg James.

Lyrics[]

I was always able to write my way out
Song always made sense to me
Now I find that when I look down
Every page is empty

There is nothing to describe
Except the moon still bright against the worrying sky
I pray the trees will get their leaves soon

So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love

And when it came, it was stranger than I had ever imagined
No cracking open of heaven
But quiet and still (all my friends are getting ill)

So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love

So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love

My arms emptied, the skies emptied
The billboards emptied
My arms emptied, the skies emptied
The buildings emptied

So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love

So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love

My arms emptied, the skies emptied
The billboards emptied
My arms emptied, the skies emptied
The buildings emptied

Critical reception[]

In a review of Dance Fever, Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic dubbed "My Love", "one of the band's best singles, the closest this album comes to nailing the expected level of mainstream 'dance' energy with its shimmering production, heaving beat, and festival-sized chorus".[4]

Live performances[]

Florence and the Machine performed "My Love" live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 11, 2022.[5] The song was also featured in the setlist for a "warm-up show" at the Alice Tully Hall in New York City, ahead of the band's upcoming concert tour the Dance Fever Tour.[6] On May 15, 2022, Florence and the Machine performed "My Love" at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.[7]
